Taos Ski Cabin Taos Ski Valley, NM

This year-round mountain residence reflects the owner's interest in alternative technology, honesty of construction, local products, and low-maintenance materials. The result is a warm mixture of rustic and modern elements.

Passive solar heating is supplemented by a wood-burning masonry stove in the living room . Solar heat from the south-facing window wall is stored in the polished concrete floors, and retained by the super-insulated wall construction. Windows and living spaces are located on the warm south side, with solid walls and support spaces along the north side.

The plumbing system incorporates three independent piping systems -- city supplied drinking water, on-site stream water for washing, and recycled waste water. An aerobic batch processor recycles waste water, used to water plants in the greenhouse and to flush the toilets.
