Removing an encroaching closet provided a clean corner, allowing an uninterrupted run of cabinets and counter space. Cabinet interiors were modified to maximize storage of recycling, brooms, pantry items, bulky appliances, and cutting boards where they would be closest to the task at hand. A small desk-height counter next to the refrigerator included shelves for cookbooks, telephone, and household paperwork.
The existing vinyl tile floor was replaced by oak to match the finish of the adjacent flooring and create a sense of openness. New cabinets and appliances were selected to modernize and coordinate with the traditional finishes of the rest of the house. The skylight above the stove was replaced, and a light well added to increase the natural light and open feeling.
